Hillberg & Berk Inspirational Women: Sherry Abbott December 04 2014
Over 25 years ago she was told she had three months to live. Today, Sherry Abbott is known as the longest living survivor of advanced small-cell ovarian cancer in the world, and has dedicated her life and her experience in the cosmetic industry to provide psychosocial and supportive cancer care programs to women and families impacted by the disease.
“Our work to help, empower, and support women at one of the most challenging times of their lives makes a meaningful difference. Surviving cancer, and knowing so many who have faced that challenge head-on, inspired me to share my voice on behalf of women with cancer and those who love and support them. My personal and professional goal is to help advocate and educate on the need for psychosocial support for women on their cancer journey.”
Sherry took the first steps in her international career in the cosmetic industry at Seneca College in Toronto, and later studied in France, Switzerland, and England. She has conducted business and supported philanthropic initiatives around the globe, in Asia, Europe, Africa, and in the United States.
Today, as Executive Director of Beauty Gives Back, Sherry is proud to build on her cancer experiences and reflect the voices of Canadian women, their families, and survivors everywhere. As spokesperson for the organization, she is keen to encourage women to seek support and take control by accessing Look Good Feel Better and FacingCancer.ca, two free cancer support programs offered by Beauty Gives Back.
“In the early 90s‘, a number of us in the cosmetic industry identified the need to support women with cancer. That vision resulted in the delivery of the Look Good Feel Better program. We now offer our free workshop at 118 cancer care facilities and hospitals across Canada. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of 1,900 industry-trained volunteers, who deliver 1,500 free workshops to help women take back some of the control that has been lost as a result of cancer and its treatment. Beauty Gives Back is the charitable arm of the cosmetic and beauty industry and our mission is to support women through the Cancer Blues.”
Always keen to inspire others to find their own philanthropic spirit, Sherry thrives on encouraging others to do what they can to make a difference and live their lives with passion: “Probably one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is to never underestimate the power of the human spirit. My guiding principle is to work hard, play hard, and whenever possible, always eat your dessert first. Hillberg & Berk was proud to partner with Sherry and to make a contribution worth over $25,000 to Look Good Feel Better in 2014.
